Become an Instructor

"While we teach, we learn." — Seneca

Whether you know a lot about a topic in coding - or just want a reason to learn something more deeply - come teach! Our mission is simply to get people together to learn, build, and explore, and hopefully, in the process, to grow a community of programmers committed to improving their craft. If this sounds like your kind of thing, we'd love for you to come share your knowledge and interest with others!

How it works

The first step is for you to come up with your topic. It can be some hands-on tips and tricks you've picked up along your coding journey, or a software development concept or approach, or just a discussion-worthy topic in the world of tech. If it's interesting to you, it's likely interesting to others!

When you have a general idea for the scope of your topic, send us the following:

Once we get your email, give us a few days and then we'll reach out for a quick discussion. If all seems good, we'll nail down dates and times and then advertise via our channels (and we encourage you to spread the word to your network as well). That's it!

Earning $$

We appreciate that putting together even a single presentation takes time and energy. And while the economics of in-person teaching, especially in our limited physical space, will never make this a big money maker, we do want to compensate our instructors in a reasonable and fair way.

To this end, we've created a simple payout framework:

  1. For a one-off presentation or event, we'll throw you, the instructor, a gift card as a token of our appreciation. Additionally, we'd be happy to promote or plug your business, side project, or cause.
  2. For a multi-hour or multi-session class, we'll work with you to determine the right price to charge participants, and then split the registration revenue with you 70/30. For example, if the registration fee is $50 for the class, and there are 10 people signed up, you would make 70% of $500 => $350.
  3. For a "code jam" or similar meetup where preparation is limited, we'll split the registration revenue 50/50.

Again, our primary goal is to build a community, and so we strive to keep our registration fees to students and participants reasonable while still being able to compensate instructors in some way for their time and energy.

Lastly, cash payouts will be on a 1099 basis. A W9 form will be required if earnings are greater than $600.
